This week has been Facebook’s most horrifying week! Why? Server failures, configuration glitches and more are leading to a loss of 50% on Facebook’s small businesses! Facebooks’s server was shut down for 6 hours! What was the cause of the shutdown and why did it take so long for it to fix? Kate Bevan, Editor of Computing, told everyone that it was a sort of configuration issue that changes the backbone router that coordinates network traffic between data centers.
Effectively, Facebook has its own internet, and it needs to communicate with the wider internet. But as there was a configuration change, Facebook went offline. Consequently, Facebook disappeared from the internet, as it could not let it know that Facebook was there! To worsen the issue, the engineers could not connect because they used the Facebook internet which was offline. Additionally, there were security dilemmas with security so that made it even harder!
Furthermore, Mark Zuckeberg has been accused of forcing frustrating content to make more profit! This reflects on the mental health of teenagers. The CEO of Facebook was under pressure to announce something, but he finally held nerve and said “The argument that we deliberately push content that makes people angry for profit is deeply illogical,” We make money from ads, and advertisers consistently tell us they don’t want their ads next to harmful or angry content.” And just when Facebook thought they had dodged a bullet, a former Facebook employee told some lawmakers that Facebook had always put money before the wellbeing of customers. This caused huge controversy!
